Woman Discovers $3,500 Gold Bracelet for $1 at Op Shop, Believes it's a Sign from Late Mother
A Queensland woman found an 18-carat gold Edwardian bracelet worth thousands of dollars at a thrift store, which she plans to keep due to its sentimental value.
A Queensland woman has discovered an antique gold bracelet, estimated to be worth between $2,500 and $3,500, for just $1 at a Vinnies op shop.
Leila Rae was browsing a store on Bribie Island when she found the bracelet. Unaware of its significant value, she purchased it for the nominal price. The Edwardian-era piece is made of solid 18-carat gold.
After realizing the potential worth of her find, Ms. Rae contacted the store to ensure the valuable item had not been mistakenly donated and offered for sale. Staff took her details in case anyone came forward to claim it, and local police were also notified.
Despite the substantial monetary value, Ms. Rae stated she has no intention of selling the bracelet. She believes the discovery holds a special connection to her late mother, who previously owned a similar bracelet that was stolen from her nursing home. "I won’t be selling as my mum had one similar stolen from her nursing home and I feel this was her way of bringing it back to me from the other side," Ms. Rae, who works as a psychic medium, explained on social media. She also noted that she and her mother used to frequent op shops together.
Ms. Rae identified the bracelet as genuine after noticing markings that confirmed the gold's purity, which became visible after exposure to chlorine in a swimming pool. She explained that some markings were faint due to age and required a microscope for identification, noting a circle symbol indicating "pure" gold from that era.
Other shoppers congratulated Ms. Rae on her find, with one commenter suggesting that "Op Shop Gods" may have helped bring the bracelet to her from her mother. Another noted that the sentimental connection indicates the bracelet was "meant for you."
