Woman Dies in Fall During Homemade Bungee Jump in Germany
A 21-year-old woman died after her homemade bungee jumping device failed, causing her to fall 50 feet and hit a rock face in a German quarry.
A 21-year-old woman has died after a fall during a homemade bungee jump at a former quarry in Warstein, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Paramedics were called to the scene around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday after the woman fell approximately 50 feet and struck a rock face. Despite resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are treating the incident as a tragic accident and stated there is no evidence of foul play. According to local reports, the woman, who was from Aschersleben, was with a group of four or five other climbers when the incident occurred. While police initially suggested she fell while climbing, a spokesperson later clarified that she died after jumping from the cliff top.
The device used was described as a highline, which is a double rope stretched between two rock faces, to which a homemade bungee cord was reportedly attached. This device is understood to have failed during her jump.
A 34-year-old man had successfully jumped prior to the woman's attempt. The remaining members of the group were unharmed but received counseling from fire department chaplains. The group members reportedly knew each other casually and occasionally participated in climbing trips together.
