A 33-year-old woman died from a stray bullet wound sustained during a street brawl in Brooklyn, the New York Police Department reported. The incident occurred early Sunday morning outside the Ooh La La Lounge near Bergen Street and Howard Avenue in Crown Heights.
The gunfire erupted around 2:23 a.m. when a fight involving approximately 100 people broke out. Police said an errant bullet struck the woman, identified as Sofronie Hartzog, in the back. A 34-year-old man was also injured, struck in the gut by a stray bullet, according to authorities.
Hartzog ran into the bar seeking help, where she collapsed in a restroom. Emergency medical services transported her to One Brooklyn Health-One Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, but she was pronounced dead. The male victim was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators are still seeking the individuals responsible for the shooting. Police took two men into custody who matched suspect descriptions, but they were later released after it was determined they were not involved in the incident, according to sources. The motive for the dispute remains unclear.
