Woman Dies After Alleged Stabbing and Subsequent Car Crash

A woman has died in hospital after police responded to a car crash and discovered she had sustained stab wounds. Eleanor Barnfield, 47, was found with puncture wounds unrelated to the collision after the vehicle she was in crashed into a wall in Bridgend on Monday.

South Wales Police were called to the scene on Coity Road at approximately 12:40 BST. Barnfield was transported to the hospital but later died. Investigators determined her injuries were sustained prior to the crash.

A 61-year-old man from Bridgend was arrested at a nearby retirement housing complex, Ger-y-Nant, on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody.

Barnfield, who was employed by the housing association Valleys to Coast, was remembered by her family as "the kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world" and "our rock." Her family stated, "She meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends."

Chief Superintendent Jason Rees stated that the investigation is being carried out by teams of detectives and specialist staff. He also acknowledged the cooperation of local residents, particularly those who were displaced due to the incident, and advised the community to expect an increased police presence as the investigation progresses. The family has been offered support by the police.
