Woman Charged in Nottingham Officer Shooting
Aisha Zaman appears in court in connection with incident where officer was shot in the foot.
Aisha Zaman, 27, has appeared in court charged with firearm offenses related to the shooting of a police officer in Nottingham city center. The officer, PC Lee Lane, sustained a gunshot wound to the foot early Sunday morning when he approached two individuals acting suspiciously at a bus stop.
Zaman was arrested Sunday evening when a vehicle was stopped in the Radford area of the city. She faces charges of possession of a prohibited firearm, specifically a shotgun, and possession of that firearm with intent to commit an indictable offense. During a court appearance on Friday, she confirmed her name, address, and date of birth. Her defense solicitor noted that Zaman is not accused of discharging the firearm or injuring the officer.
No plea was entered during the hearing. Zaman, who resides in Hyson Green, Nottingham, was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on November 11.
PC Lane remains hospitalized and is believed to have undergone surgery. Nottingham police and crime commissioner Gary Godden stated that the officer's injuries are likely to be life-altering. In 2021, PC Lane was recognized for his bravery in rescuing a woman from a canal.
A sawn-off shotgun was recovered at the scene on Angel Row, near the city's Old Market Square. Several other individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. These include a 24-year-old man and two women, aged 25 and 21, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have been released on conditional bail pending further investigation. A 30-year-old man arrested in Bedfordshire on Monday on suspicion of assisting an offender has been recalled to prison for breaching his license terms.
A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were also arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender. They remain in police custody.
Detective Chief Superintendent Rich Bull, leading the investigation, expressed gratitude for public support and stated that the investigation continues. He added that charging Zaman offers reassurance and that the team is pursuing further leads to ensure all responsible parties are brought to justice.
