A bomb squad was deployed and homes were evacuated in Sheffield, England, after "substances" were discovered in a concealed area of a residential property.
Police initially responded to an address on Mapplebeck Road in the High Green area on Friday. The discovery on Tuesday prompted a large-scale emergency response, including the Army's Explosive Ordnance Team and a military-grade explosives robot. A 100-meter cordon was established around the property.
Rachel Hale, 35, has been charged under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883. She was remanded in custody and appeared in court on Monday. Her next court appearance is scheduled for September 22 at Sheffield Crown Court.
Assistant Chief Constable Ian Proffitt of South Yorkshire Police stated that the evacuation, which also led to the temporary closure of Greengate Lane Academy, would remain in effect until specialists deemed the area safe. He assured residents that the measures were for their safety, while acknowledging the disruption.
"There has been a police presence at the house since Friday, as part of an investigation into potential explosive substances," Proffitt said in a video message. "A woman has been charged in connection with this and appeared in court on Monday."
He further explained that the evacuation became necessary following the discovery of additional items in a concealed area on Tuesday afternoon. Proffitt emphasized that such decisions are not taken lightly and are made in consultation with experts to ensure public safety.
Residents who were evacuated have been directed to a nearby rest center. Road closures are in effect on Mapplebeck Road, Griffiths Road, School Road, Green Gate Lane, Worrall Road, Beechwood Road, Hawthorne Road, Entwhistle Road, and Greenwood Road.
One resident, Tina Martin, told the BBC that she received a knock on her door informing her of the mandatory evacuation. She expressed worry about leaving pets and belongings behind.
South Yorkshire Police have stated that the Explosive Ordnance Team will provide guidance on when it is safe for residents to return to their homes. Affected residents can contact Sheffield City Council for assistance.
