Becky Curd, 28, decided against placing her 95-year-old grandmother, Patricia Curd, in a care home and instead built a custom £70,000 annexe in the family's garden. The move came as Patricia, who has lived alone since her husband's death 37 years ago, was finding it increasingly difficult to manage her three-bedroom house.
The new dwelling, located just 60 feet from the main house, features a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, and living room. This arrangement allows Patricia to maintain her independence while remaining under the close watch of her daughter, Nicky, son-in-law Chris, and granddaughter Becky.
"It was my dad's idea," Becky said, explaining that the annexe took approximately 12 weeks to build. "She lost my grandad 37 years ago and the three bedroom house was becoming too much for her. Grandma was struggling with cleaning and maintenance costs."
Becky, who lives in Kent, emphasized that having her grandmother nearby provides significant peace of mind. Patricia, a former hairdresser and housekeeper, has always had a close relationship with Becky. As her health and mobility have declined, the proximity of the annexe has facilitated easier support from the family.
Family members now assist Patricia with daily routines, including waking up, dressing, and preparing meals. The arrangement ensures she receives regular care and companionship without moving to a care facility, which she had expressed a strong desire to avoid.
"The only other option would be a care home, which is something she's always said she doesn't want to happen," Becky noted. She added that her grandmother often expresses gratitude, saying, "'I'm a lucky lady' to me most days."
Becky shared that while the setup may seem unusual to some, she believes it has strengthened their bond. Daily interactions, from sharing cups of tea and conversation to assisting with her evening routine, have created cherished memories. She encourages other families with the space to consider similar arrangements, stating, "If you have the space, go for it. It's not for everyone but it means she can enjoy the rest of her days in a familiar environment with her family around her."
