Woman Blocks Friend After Tone-Deaf Texts During Grief

A 23-year-old woman blocked a friend on all communication channels after the friend sent a series of "tone deaf" text messages requesting a favor, even after being informed of a recent family death. The texts came as the woman was dealing with the loss of her cousin.

The friend, suspecting her boyfriend was cheating, sent messages asking the woman to call a number that appeared on her boyfriend's smartwatch. The friend wanted to identify the contact, which had a male name but appeared to be communicating with a female.

"Girl do you think you can call this number for me?" the friend texted. "I'm wearing my boyfriend's watch and this number keeps popping up on WhatsApp."

The woman, who had just lost a family member, responded, "Hi girl.. Uhh yikes I would but my cousin just died and my family and I are all here waiting for her body to be picked up. Sorry."

After the friend offered condolences, she quickly pivoted back to her request. "OMG I'm so sorry for your loss," the friend texted, followed by, "But can you call just for like 10 seconds and tell me who it sounds like? Please it'll be quick."

Reluctantly, the grieving woman agreed. Upon answering the call, she told her friend, "The person who answered was a female." The friend continued to press for more information, asking if the woman knew who it was or if they had a profile picture on WhatsApp.

After the woman stated she couldn't help further, her friend sent more messages. The grieving woman ultimately shared the exchange online, stating she blocked her friend on her work number, personal number, and even her mother's contact.

"Texts speak for themselves," she said of the interaction. She noted that while the incident occurred some time ago, she felt compelled to share it. She also reflected that if faced with a similar situation today, she would have blocked her friend immediately after the fourth text.

Online reactions to the woman's post largely supported her decision to block her friend, with many commenting on the friend's lack of empathy and self-centeredness during a sensitive time.
