Woman Arrested in Costa Rica in Homicide of American Tourist
Authorities apprehended a suspect after a manhunt in a popular tourist destination following the death of a 74-year-old American.
A woman has been arrested in Costa Rica in connection with the death of a 74-year-old American citizen. The arrest occurred Tuesday afternoon in San Felipe de Alajuelita, following a manhunt in Playas del Coco, a popular beach town on the country's northern Pacific coast.
The American victim was found dead on September 27 at a condominium near the beach. Costa Rican authorities stated that the victim met the suspect, identified as Ortiz, online. He reportedly picked her up near Playas del Coco and took her to his apartment.
According to Deputy Director Vladimir Muñoz of the Costa Rica Judicial Investigation Agency, the two individuals were involved in a dispute, during which Ortiz allegedly struck the victim, causing a fatal head injury. Authorities also indicated that Ortiz is accused of stealing the victim's bank cards, though it remains unclear if they were used.
Surveillance footage released by the Costa Rican Judicial Investigation Agency showed a woman sought in connection with the homicide. At the time of the incident, she was described as wearing blue denim shorts, sandals, and a white bra with chain-like accessories. The video also showed her walking down a street with another woman, who has also been arrested.
The arrest of Ortiz was reportedly the result of confidential tips received by law enforcement. She had been on the run until her apprehension on Tuesday.
