Woman Arrested in Costa Rica in Death of American Man
Authorities apprehended a suspect accused of fatally injuring a 74-year-old American after an online meeting.
A woman has been arrested in Costa Rica in connection with the death of an American citizen, according to the Costa Rica Judicial Investigation Agency. The suspect, identified as Ortiz, was apprehended Tuesday afternoon in connection with the killing of Fleming, a 74-year-old American found dead on September 27.
The incident occurred in Playas del Coco, a tourist hotspot on Costa Rica’s northern Pacific coast. Authorities stated that Fleming met Ortiz online and brought her to his condominium near the beach.
During an argument at the residence, Ortiz allegedly struck Fleming, causing a fatal head injury, the agency reported. Ortiz is also accused of stealing Fleming's bank cards, though it remains unclear if they were used.
Surveillance video released by police showed Ortiz walking down a street with another woman, who has also been arrested. Ortiz was apprehended at a house in San Felipe de Alajuelita following confidential tips to law enforcement.
At the time of the incident, the suspect was reportedly wearing blue denim shorts, sandals, and a white bra with chain-like accessories. Authorities are continuing their investigation.
