A mother of four has described the trauma of being arrested and held in a police cell for 13 hours after a neighbor allegedly misled authorities into believing she was the victim of a violent attack. Ruzena Gaborova, 48, was taken into custody in front of her disabled children following a prolonged dispute with neighbor Salina Begum, 47, in Chatham, Kent.
Begum, who has a prior conviction for harassment, was recently given a suspended prison sentence for perverting the course of justice. The court heard there was a history of animosity between the two women, with numerous allegations exchanged over several years. However, Begum was often identified as the aggressor, and no action was taken.
The dispute escalated in August 2022 when police responded to an altercation between Gaborova and Begum. Begum, presented as the victim, claimed Gaborova assaulted her and provided video footage as evidence. Gaborova was arrested the following day, but her own CCTV footage showed Begum as the initial aggressor, leading to no further action being taken against Gaborova at that time.
Two months later, Begum reported the alleged assault again, submitting the same video. In May 2023, she contacted police a third time, claiming another broom assault by Gaborova. Gaborova was arrested six days later at her home. She was detained overnight and released the next morning. It later emerged that Begum had used the 2022 video again, and the alleged May 2023 incident had not occurred.
Gaborova told the Daily Mail that Begum's actions caused her significant stress, leading to high blood pressure and hospital visits. She recounted instances where Begum allegedly spied on her family, damaged her car, and even left a decapitated rat on it. Gaborova also claimed Begum's husband had chased her with a metal pole.
During one of Gaborova's arrests, her son, who uses a wheelchair, was distressed. Gaborova, who moved to Britain from Slovakia 16 years ago, stated that problems began shortly after Begum moved in. She alleged that Begum and her children would harass her family, including pouring water on her door and throwing eggs at windows.
Authorities were alerted to Begum's actions after she admitted to perverting the course of justice. Maidstone Crown Court sentenced Begum to a 13-month prison term, suspended for 18 months, along with unpaid work and rehabilitation requirements. The judge criticized Begum for wasting police time and noted difficulty in trusting her testimony.
A spokesperson for Kent Police stated that arrests are made when officers have reasonable grounds to suspect a crime and detention is necessary for further inquiries. The spokesperson added that a thorough investigation identified Begum's false claims, leading to her arrest and charge. Due to the evidence against her, Begum pleaded guilty and was sentenced.
