Woman Accosts Couple During Engagement Proposal, Tells Them to 'Go Back to Mexico'
A racist outburst marred a special moment for a California couple at a public park.
A planned engagement proposal at Crescent Bay Point Park in Laguna Beach, California, was disrupted by a woman who hurled racist insults at the couple. The incident, captured on video, occurred as Emmanuel Banuelos was about to propose to his girlfriend, Hayley Lugo, accompanied by a mariachi band.
The woman, who has not been formally identified, approached the couple and their assembled mariachi band, initially complaining about the noise. As the proposal began, her verbal harassment escalated, with the woman heard on video saying, "It's f--king Mexican. This isn't Mexico either, you motherf--kers." As she walked past the couple, she yelled, "Go back to Mexico."
Lugo told ABC 7 that the words were deeply hurtful, not only to them but also as an insult to Mexican and Hispanic culture. "It hurts a lot because it's not just us there. She's being mean to the whole Mexican culture, the whole Hispanic culture, like everyone's felt it," she stated.
Banuelos had arranged for the mariachi band because Lugo had expressed a fondness for their music. He recounted Lugo's disbelief at the woman's aggressive behavior.
Trinity, Lugo's sister and the videographer for the proposal, also expressed her shock at the incident. She noted that the woman directed her tirade at the camera setup before confronting the couple. "I could not believe that I was being told those words," Trinity said. She decided not to escalate the situation at the time to avoid further disrupting the proposal.
The video of the incident has since gone viral, drawing widespread criticism of the woman's behavior. Lugo commented on the potential for such incidents to become public spectacles, advising others not to emulate the woman's actions.
The City of Laguna Beach issued a statement condemning the incident, asserting that the hateful language and behavior do not reflect the community's values of acceptance and inclusion. "We reject hateful language and behavior of any kind as it does not reflect our community’s values," the city stated.
