Laura Comfort, 60, has revealed her approach to biohacking, a practice she says has resulted in a biological age of 40. Comfort, who gave birth to twins at 53, attributes her youthful appearance and energy to science, technology, and lifestyle strategies aimed at optimizing biology.
Comfort's journey into biohacking began out of curiosity. Two years ago, she underwent an epigenetic aging test, which uses a blood sample to measure DNA changes and accumulated cellular damage. The results indicated her biological age was 40, a finding she says confirmed her own observations and those of others.
She describes biohacking as upgrading the body's operating system, differentiating her approach from extreme routines adopted by some like multi-millionaire Bryan Johnson, who reportedly spends millions on anti-aging treatments. Comfort's methods are presented as more accessible, incorporating everyday practices such as consuming coffee with grass-fed butter for glucose stability, eating fiber before fats and proteins, and using magnesium supplements, red light therapy, and weight training.
Comfort's past health challenges included polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) diagnosed at 19, likely triggered by a high-stress lifestyle and low body fat. This condition led her to believe she would struggle with fertility. Initially, she focused on her career in finance and music, adopting a lifestyle characterized by stress and insufficient sleep.
By the mid-1990s, after meeting her first husband, she began re-evaluating her health. She shifted away from punishing workouts and processed foods towards healthy fats and organic ingredients, incorporating yoga, acupuncture, and supplements. With the help of fertility medicine, she successfully had her first child at 31, followed by two more.
Following her divorce in 2010, Comfort experienced grief and panic attacks, leading to a relapse in unhealthy habits. Recognizing the need for change, she focused on rebuilding her health from the inside out, incorporating mindfulness, nutrient-dense meals, and a balance of cardio and strength training. She also adopted daily affirmations to improve her mindset.
At 46, she met her current husband, Adrian, who is 15 years her junior. Aware of the potential desire for children, Comfort pursued fertility treatments again. Despite initial setbacks, including clinics turning her away due to her age and the loss of thawed eggs, she and Adrian eventually pursued IVF with surrogacy in Ukraine. Using embryos frozen when she was 47, she became pregnant with twins at 53.
Her pregnancy was complicated by placenta previa and a blood clotting disorder, but her established healthy habits, including supplements, mindfulness, and a nutrient-rich diet, provided her with energy. She continued to work and tour during her pregnancy, with many people unaware of her age. Upon the birth of her twins, Freddie and Katerina, in November 2019, she experienced a quick recovery and found being a midlife mother more relaxed than her earlier experiences.
Comfort has written a book, "The Comfort Code: Rewriting the Rules of Aging," to share her experiences and encourage other women to pursue their goals regardless of age. She advocates for a focus on "FUN-span," emphasizing living well throughout life. Her biohacking tips include the use of functional mushrooms, intermittent fasting, training in sync with hormonal cycles, resetting circadian rhythms with morning light, and daily tapping exercises.
