Woman, 28, Reveals £800 Wig That Gave Her Back Confidence After 12 Years of Hair Loss
Sophie Law, who was diagnosed with alopecia areata at 26, shares how a human hair wig transformed her life.

Sophie Law, from Kent, England, found a solution to her decade-long hair loss struggle after being diagnosed with alopecia areata at age 26. The condition, which causes the immune system to attack hair follicles, has no cure. Law's hair loss began at 16, initially attributed to an underactive thyroid, but thyroid medication did not halt the shedding.
Over the next ten years, Law tried various treatments including density-boosting shampoos, dietary changes, and red-light therapy, none of which were effective. By 23, she noticed multiple bald patches. The autoimmune condition of alopecia areata, which also affected celebrities like Jada Pinkett Smith, was confirmed two years later. While medical treatments like steroids exist, Law opted against them due to concerns about side effects. She also used hair-colour powder to conceal bald spots, but worried about it rubbing off or being affected by wind.
Clip-in hair extensions were not an option due to insufficient hair. The turning point came earlier this year with the purchase of an £800 human hair wig. Ready-to-wear wigs, made from human or artificial hair, are a common option for those experiencing hair loss. Human hair wigs can cost between £200 and over £2,000 and can be styled like natural hair, requiring washing every seven to ten wears. Synthetic wigs are more affordable, typically ranging from £50 to £300, and last four to six months.
Law's wig, purchased from Wig and Weaves by Hediye in Ashford, Kent, features a transparent lace hairline designed to blend seamlessly with the scalp. Upon wearing the wig, Law described crying tears of happiness, stating it made her feel
