The WNBA has announced it will not punish star players Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers for a social media video that appeared to show them placing a wager on a WNBA game. The league removed the video, which captured a friendly $400 bet on the outcome of a Dallas Wings and Atlanta Dream game, shortly after it was posted.

A WNBA spokesperson stated that while the post was intended to be lighthearted, players are aware of league policies prohibiting betting on WNBA games. The league confirmed that it "addressed the matter internally" and will "reemphasize with the players involved that conversations about wagering on WNBA games, even when intended as a joke, can have negative consequences."

A person with direct knowledge of the matter confirmed to The Associated Press that the players would not face punishment. The video, which was posted on the WNBA's official X account, included a clip of Bueckers being asked about the bet made with Reese during All-Star Weekend.

Section 5(c) of the WNBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement outlines that players found guilty of wagering on WNBA competitions may be subject to fines, suspension, or dismissal at the Commissioner's discretion. The incident occurs amidst a period of increased scrutiny for the league, which has recently dealt with other controversies.

Separately, Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton was fined and banned from the team's next five home games following accusations of making derogatory remarks to two fans. In response, Storm Majority Owner Ginny Gilder issued a statement apologizing for the incident and reaffirming the team's commitment to an inclusive environment.

In the game that was the subject of the wager, the Atlanta Dream defeated the Dallas Wings 82-81. Angel Reese recorded 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Dream, while Paige Bueckers contributed 16 points for the Wings.
