Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink has publicly denounced former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom's recent anti-transgender actions, labeling his crusade against trans inclusion in the WNBA as a "stupid piece of shit" stunt intended to boost his own relevance.
"I think he’s just trying to stay relevant," Brink said in a clip shared by The Mirror's Jarrod Castillo, following the Sparks' loss to the Atlanta Dream on Monday. Brink's comments came a day after Freedom was ejected from a Chicago Sky game following a confrontation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud.
Freedom, a 11-year NBA veteran, attended the game wearing a shirt that read, “WOMAN noun. adult human female.” He was removed from the game after stepping onto the court during an exchange with Cloud.
This incident has drawn criticism from figures like Stephen A. Smith and Charlamagne tha God, who described Freedom's actions as "classless" and a "spectacle around a hypothetical problem." The Chicago Sky's owner, Michael Alter, has since banned Freedom from attending the team's home games, stating that Freedom appeared to be at the game specifically to be a provocateur.
Freedom has recently garnered attention for his stance on trans women in sports. He announced earlier this month that he identified as a woman and declared himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft. Notably, there are currently no known transgender women playing in the WNBA.
When asked about the debate surrounding trans women in women's sports, Brink stated, "I think it’s a non-issue, and I think it’s people trying to just come for the trans community, and I just don’t stand for that."
Brink suggested that most WNBA fans watch for the "right reasons." She added, "But I think taking something that’s a non-issue right now and just trying to use it for clickbait or for views for likes, and then targeting a vulnerable community, is just really low."
Freedom, in a Fox Business appearance last Thursday, asserted that he is "here to protect women." He also claimed that if he were to join the WNBA, he would aim to break Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point record, a feat actually achieved in the NBA, where Freedom's career high was 33 points.
