Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve wore a "Trans Kids Belong" t-shirt on Sunday, drawing attention during her team's game against the Indiana Fever. Reeve's statement coincided with escalating tensions surrounding transgender participation in women's sports, a debate recently amplified by Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham's comments.

Reeve, who also coaches the USA Basketball women's national team, addressed the controversy prior to the matchup. "I come from a space of inclusion," Reeve stated. "The narrative that I think is problematic is to suggest that transgender athletes are the biggest problem in women's sports. This is what's bothersome. There is a faction of people in our country that are making this a massive issue."

Her stance contrasted with Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White, who indicated she lacked sufficient scientific education to offer a definitive opinion on the matter.

The controversy extended beyond the court, as demonstrations outside the Target Center in Minneapolis turned chaotic. Rallies organized by opposing groups resulted in clashes between supporters of Sophie Cunningham and pro-trans demonstrators. Video footage captured an incident where a supporter of Cunningham allegedly snatched a t-shirt from a pro-trans demonstrator, leading to a confrontation that required intervention from arena security.

This marks the third consecutive road game for the Indiana Fever that has seen demonstrations, following similar protests in Seattle and Portland related to Cunningham's remarks on transgender athletes.

Cunningham has been a central figure in the debate since her comments to ESPN that young girls "shouldn't have to go against biological men" in sports. Cunningham has been at the center of a war of words after her comments on trans athletes

While Cunningham has received support at some WNBA arenas, she faced boos from the home crowd in Portland. Following the incident, Cunningham addressed social media, clarifying a gesture made during the game by stating, "I didn't call them losers but I did talk s***." She later posted a video with a finger to her lips, seemingly in response to the booing, and also shared a clip of herself giving her game-worn shoes to a young fan. The tension on the sidelines carried over to the streets outside Target Center, where demonstrations turned chaotic ahead of tip-off in Minneapolis Rallies organized outside the arena brought opposing groups face-to-face as supporters of Sophie Cunningham clashed directly with pro-trans demonstrators
