The WNBA addressed the ongoing debate surrounding transgender athletes participating in the league, with officials stating there are "no immediate eligibility matters affecting" the WNBA. The league also issued a strong condemnation of "bad-faith efforts" to "demean or marginalize others" in a statement following a meeting of its anti-hate task force.
The discussions, which included WNBA general managers and presidents, covered a range of topics, including the continued hate and vitriol directed at players online. The league spokesperson emphasized that conversations about transgender athletes would be approached thoughtfully and in alignment with the league's values.
The WNBA's stance comes amidst a period of heightened public discussion, fueled in part by recent comments from Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham stated in an interview that while she aims to extend love, she also believes in being honest and wants to protect young girls in sports from competing against biological men. She later described her views as "common sense."
Separately, former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom has publicly declared his intention to enter the WNBA draft pool for 2027, posting a workout video with the caption, "Let ‘The Transition’ to the @WNBA begin."
The league's task force also prioritized addressing online hate directed at players. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert previously stated in a memo that the league will approach the topic of transgender athlete participation "thoughtfully, respectfully, and in alignment with the longstanding values of our league." She also noted that player eligibility rules are collectively bargained.
Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White, when asked about a hard foul against Cunningham, reaffirmed her support for her players, stating, "I take personally any suggestions that I don’t 100 percent always have my player’s back." White added that she leads with "love, grace, humility and integrity" and believes that "hate, fearmongering, divisiveness" will not prevail in the league. "We are united, we are connected. We will not be divided," she said. "When they go low, we go high. Love will win. Grace will win. Humility will win, and kindness will win. I stand by them. Everybody else can go to hell."
