Witness Recounts Botched Execution of Christa Pike
An official witness described disturbing elements during the execution of Christa Pike, which was delayed for three decades after her 1995 murder conviction.
An official witness has detailed disturbing events during the execution of Christa Pike, whose death sentence was carried out three decades after she was convicted of a brutal murder.
Pike, who was 18 at the time of the crime, was executed by lethal injection on October 1, 2026, at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee. The execution followed a 30-year wait after her conviction for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Slemmer, then 19, was lured to her death by Pike, her boyfriend, and another young woman under the pretense of smoking cannabis. The victim was bludgeoned to death in woodland, and a pentagram symbol was carved into her chest with a box cutter.
The witness, whose account was published in the Daily Mail, described Pike's behavior during the execution as including tears, laughter, and disturbing snores. The witness also noted that a rock was placed on Pike's chest, an element that will remain with the witness.
Pike's crime occurred after she and Slemmer had participated in an educational program for disadvantaged young adults. The murder and its subsequent trial garnered significant public attention over the years.
Pike's legal battles continued for years, including an attempt to fight a conviction in a 2001 attack on an inmate while already on death row.
Pike's case highlights the prolonged legal processes and the significant impact of capital punishment on victims' families and witnesses.
