A Wisconsin brewery has announced plans for a "half-price beer day" to coincide with the death of Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. The Minocqua Brewing Company stated on Instagram that the promotion would be offered "when they announce that McConnell's Faustian dance has finally ended, we're gonna start serving our beer at ‘half price.’"
The brewery has attributed about half of the nation's current issues to the longtime Kentucky Republican. This follows a previous controversial promotion where the company offered free beer on "the day" President Donald Trump dies.
Senator McConnell, 84, has been absent from the Senate for over a month following a fall at his home that resulted in hospitalization. Last week, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called on McConnell to publicly demonstrate his fitness to serve or resign from his position.
The Minocqua Brewing Company has a history of engaging in progressive political commentary. In January, the brewery reportedly suggested it would offer free beer if Trump were killed. The owner, Kirk Bangstad, also founded the Minocqua Brewing Company SuperPAC, which aims to remove Republican elected officials who he claims perpetuated election lies and downplayed the seriousness of COVID-19.
This announcement comes as the brewery faces scrutiny over its alcohol permit. Wisconsin's Department of Revenue had initiated plans to revoke the permit, citing allegations of transporting canned beer from Illinois without the required permits and taxes. However, a spokesperson for the department stated that the permit will remain active pending the outcome of an administrative appeal filed by the brewery. The proposed revocation was set to take effect on Tuesday.
