Willie Aames, known for his roles in the 1970s and 80s sitcoms "Eight Is Enough" and "Charles in Charge," recently made a rare public appearance in Los Angeles. At 65, Aames, who began his acting career as a child in the early 1970s, has openly discussed the dramatic shifts in his life, including periods of immense fame followed by significant financial and personal struggles.

Aames' career started with early roles in shows like "Gunsmoke," "The Waltons," and "The Odd Couple" in 1971. He gained wider recognition as T.J. Latimer in "Family" before landing the role of Tommy Bradford in ABC's "Eight Is Enough," appearing from 1977 to 1981. Following that, he starred as Buddy in the CBS sitcom "Charles in Charge" from 1984 until its conclusion in 1990. He also lent his voice to animated series, including "Dungeons & Dragons" and "Bibleman."

Despite reaching a peak where he earned over a million dollars annually during "Eight Is Enough," Aames detailed significant financial difficulties in the late 2000s. In a 2009 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he described losing his job, bank account, wife, and child, leading to periods of homelessness where he slept in parking garages and parks. He recalled feeling shame and questioning his life's trajectory.

Speaking in 2017, Aames described this period as a turning point in his late 40s. He stated that after losing everything, he was faced with the choice of becoming a victim or starting over. He chose to learn new trades, including becoming a satellite installer, and worked on a cruise ship.

He has been married three times and has two children. His most recent acting credit was in the 2016 movie "Armageddon Road."
