William Shatner, 95, and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, 61, have revealed they were diagnosed with stage 4 cancer concurrently. Both are now cancer-free, having undergone separate but overlapping treatment periods.
Melanie Shatner Gretsch was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2022 after discovering a lump in her breast. Her treatment included multiple rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and 30 radiation therapy sessions over 18 months. Despite her own health battle, she expressed significant concern for her father's well-being.
A year after his daughter's diagnosis, William Shatner learned he had stage 4 melanoma that had metastasized to his lungs and brain. He underwent surgery to remove a facial tumor and subsequently completed two years of immunotherapy.
"We got the perfect doctors for her cancer and my cancer," Shatner told People. He noted that he continued his work and daily activities during his treatment. Shatner also offered financial support to his daughter, telling her, "I do not want you to worry. Just send me the bills."
The father-daughter pair drew strength from each other during their respective health crises. Melanie Shatner Gretsch recalled her father's resilience, stating he "kept working and moving forward" throughout his diagnosis. She and her husband also ensured he was not alone during his recovery periods.
Now both in remission, Shatner and Gretsch are launching a podcast titled "No Time but Now." The podcast will feature conversations with health experts and other cancer survivors. Shatner has spoken about a newfound fear of death as he ages, expressing a desire to understand the meaning of life before his passing.
In a recent interview, Shatner shared that his current motivation is to remain healthy and functional, and he hopes to die peacefully in his sleep. His daughter stated that overcoming cancer has been life-changing, bringing her a sense of freedom and reduced fear.
