Will 'Ted Lasso' Return for Season 5? Stars and Creators Weigh In
The future of the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ comedy remains uncertain as the cast and crew share their thoughts on a potential fifth season.
Apple TV+ has not officially renewed the acclaimed comedy "Ted Lasso" for a fifth season, leaving fans to wonder about the future of AFC Richmond. The show's fourth season finale, which aired three weeks ago, was described as a "Season Finale" rather than a "Series Finale," sparking hope for continuation.
Co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis has previously expressed a desire for a three-season arc, but in a recent "Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso" interview, he indicated that while he would like to do more seasons, the process requires significant collaboration and "takes a village." He also confirmed that a writers' room for a potential new season has not yet been convened.
Brendan Hunt, who co-created the series and plays Coach Beard, also voiced optimism about a fifth season. "I certainly hope [Season 5] happens, and I’m optimistic, but yeah, haven’t heard anything official yet," Hunt told Deadline. "It would be nice though."
The cast has also shared their hopes for future storylines. Stars Abbie Hern (Gemma) and Tanya Reynolds (Alice Chilton), who joined in Season 4, expressed interest in exploring their characters' pasts. Reynolds suggested a flashback to their "Arsenal days" to resolve lingering character conflicts. Hern added she would like to see her character, Alice, in a team kit, even if it required visual effects.
Annette Badland, who played Mae Green, suggested a potential return in a different capacity, akin to the angel character in the film "It's a Wonderful Life," serving as a "conscience" for the team.
Season 4 of "Ted Lasso" consisted of 10 episodes, with the finale concluding a period of significant changes for the team, including Alice taking on the role of manager for AFC's women's team.
Given the show's popularity and critical success, Apple TV+ could potentially greenlight more seasons. However, the timeline for a potential renewal, writing, and production remains unclear. If renewed, and without major delays, new episodes might not arrive until fall 2027 or early to mid-2028, considering the gap between previous seasons. "Ted Lasso" Season 4 is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
