Will Smith Admits Ignorance of Yoshinobu Yamamoto's Mysterious Notebook Contents

The contents of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto's widely discussed notebook remain a closely guarded secret, even from his catcher, Will Smith.

As Yamamoto prepares to take the mound for Game 2 of the National League Championship Series, Smith stated that he does not know what information the Japanese star records during games. "We're talking constantly, so it's probably the same stuff," Smith said when asked about the notebook's contents.

When pressed by reporters whether Yamamoto jots down phrases like "I smoked this guy" after striking out a batter, Smith responded with a laugh and a denial. The pitcher has been frequently observed writing in his notebook and taking notes in the dugout between innings since joining the Dodgers.

Former professional pitcher Robby Rowland suggested that Yamamoto's preference for a physical notebook over a tablet stems from his practice of drawing the strike zone. Rowland theorized that these drawings might include circled pitches with accompanying numbers, potentially indicating batters' swing tendencies. He also proposed that the act of writing aids Yamamoto's memory more effectively than digital methods.

During last year's World Series, Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci reported that Yamamoto, accompanied by his interpreter and Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior, reviews the notebook between innings. This personal scouting report is believed to help him strategize for the next several hitters he is set to face.

Yamamoto's meticulous approach was instrumental in his World Series MVP award last year. In three appearances and two starts, he pitched 17.2 innings with a 1.02 ERA and recorded 15 strikeouts. The Dodgers are looking for a strong performance from Yamamoto in Game 2 following a narrow 2-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in the series opener.
