Will Reeve, Son of Actor Christopher Reeve, Shares Cancer Diagnosis Journey

Will Reeve, the 34-year-old son of late actor Christopher Reeve, has revealed he was diagnosed with a rare form of testicular cancer earlier this year. He shared his experience in an interview, detailing the journey from discovering a lump to undergoing treatment and achieving remission.
The diagnosis came in April when Reeve noticed a tender lump during a shower, prompting his wife, Amanda, to encourage him to seek medical attention. An ultrasound confirmed the presence of cancer. Reeve told People magazine that he was initially stunned and believed the issue might resolve on its own.
In early May, Reeve underwent an orchiectomy to remove the affected testicle and also banked sperm to preserve his ability to have children in the future. Subsequent tests revealed that 95% of the cancer was embryonal carcinoma, an aggressive subtype.
Further Treatment and Personal Reflections
On June 10, Reeve had a six-hour surgery to remove numerous lymph nodes in his abdomen, three of which tested positive for cancer. He then underwent two rounds of chemotherapy. This treatment brought back memories of his mother, Dana Reeve's, own battle with cancer. Dana Reeve died from lung cancer at age 44 in 2006, 17 months after Christopher Reeve's death from heart failure in 2004.
Reeve described the experience of being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering, the same institution where his mother received care, as deeply ironic. He reflected on how his illness allowed him to experience life from the perspectives of both his parents simultaneously: as a cancer patient mirroring his mother's struggle and as someone receiving care, like his father did for nine years after his paralyzing equestrian accident in 1995. He specifically noted his wife Amanda's role as a caregiver, reminding him of his mother.
He recounted the profound impact of his parents' health crises on his life, from his father's paralysis and subsequent care to his mother's illness and death. Reeve stated that while he had faced many challenges, none had been as personal as his own cancer diagnosis.
As of a September 8 check-up, Will Reeve is cancer-free. Christopher Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down after a horse riding accident in 1995, requiring a wheelchair and ventilator for the remainder of his life.
