Will Levis Joins Jets Practice Squad Seeking Development

Will Levis is joining the New York Jets' practice squad as he seeks to restart his NFL career, according to multiple reports. The move is expected to coincide with the release of quarterback Bailey Zappe.

Levis, 27, entered the league as a second-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2023 draft. He showed flashes of potential in his rookie season, highlighted by a four-touchdown performance in his first start. However, injuries and inconsistency marked his time with the Titans. After struggling through the 2024 season with turnovers and a low win-loss record in games he started, Levis suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery and sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. The Titans subsequently waived him in August following the selection of Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in 2025.

The Jets' decision to bring Levis onto the practice squad is not an indication they plan to replace current starter Geno Smith. Instead, the organization aims to provide Levis with a more developmental environment, particularly under the guidance of experienced offensive coaches. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich has a history of working with quarterbacks who have achieved significant success, including coaching Peyton Manning during his MVP and Super Bowl-winning seasons, and working with Philip Rivers and Andrew Luck.

Jets quarterback coach Bill Musgrave also brings a track record of developing quarterbacks, having worked with Matt Ryan and Derek Carr. Levis possesses notable arm talent, but his NFL journey has been hindered by issues with decision-making, health, and poise. The opportunity with the Jets offers him a chance to refine these areas under a coaching staff known for its quarterback development.

Levis's NFL career now enters a critical phase, as he looks to prove he can overcome past struggles and develop into a consistent player, despite being with his second team after his initial stint in Tennessee.
