Kain Medrano, a linebacker for the Washington Commanders, experienced a career milestone on Sunday with his first interception returned for a touchdown during the team's 33-31 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. The pivotal play occurred in the fourth quarter, extending the Commanders' lead and marking a significant moment for the second-year player.
Medrano's wife, Layla Riggins, shared her enthusiastic reaction to the play in a video posted on social media. The clip shows Riggins celebrating in the stands, with on-screen text declaring, "My reaction to my hubby getting his pick 6." The interception helped the Commanders solidify their advantage after they had taken a 27-24 lead on the preceding possession.
Medrano's path to the NFL has been marked by perseverance. Growing up in Pueblo, Colorado, he was a dual-sport athlete in high school, excelling in football and track and field. Initially considered undersized, Medrano committed to UCLA in 2018. He began his college career as a wide receiver under then-coach Chip Kelly but transitioned to linebacker the following season, a move that proved transformative.
During his tenure at UCLA from 2021 to 2024, Medrano became a key defensive player. In his senior year, alongside future NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Carson Schwesinger, he recorded 72 tackles, including 50 solo tackles. That same season, he achieved another touchdown-scoring interception against Nebraska.
Medrano's strong performance at the NFL scouting combine following his senior year garnered attention. He posted an impressive 4.46 40-yard dash, a 38-inch vertical jump, and a broad jump of 10 feet, 5 inches. Despite being viewed as a developmental prospect with hybrid safety and linebacker potential, he was selected by the Commanders in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
His rookie season was hampered by a hamstring injury sustained in training camp, leading him to start the year on the PUP list and appear in only nine games. This current season, however, Medrano has played in all three games for the Commanders, contributing five tackles against Seattle.
