Mia Bieniemy, 57, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was allegedly shot by the couple's son at their Virginia home on Sunday night. She is currently in stable condition, according to Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, of Ashburn, Virginia, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Mia Bieniemy called 911 after the incident, Chapman told WJLA-TV. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing, and authorities do not believe there is any threat to the public.
The Chiefs organization has acknowledged awareness of the incident. Head coach Andy Reid stated that the team's thoughts are with the Bieniemy family and that Eric Bieniemy is taking time away from training camp to be with his family.
Eric Bieniemy, 56, rejoined the Chiefs in January as offensive coordinator, a role he previously held from 2018 to 2022. His career also includes coaching stints with the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and UCLA Bruins.
Elijah Bieniemy's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 31. Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office at 703-777-1021.
