A 70-year-old retired Defence Forces member is facing potential homelessness just weeks after his wife's death, as Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has demanded he vacate the home they shared. The man, Anthony Mangan, stated that after informing the council of his wife Teresa's passing and providing her death certificate and other required documentation, he was initially assured he could remain in the home at the pensioner's rate of rent.
However, the following day, Mangan received a letter stating he must leave the property on Loreto Row, Rathfarnham, south Dublin, as his wife was the only person listed as living at the address. Mangan explained that his name was not on the deed due to past relationship issues, and his wife had opted to have the house solely in her name.
Mangan, who has been working since he was 12 and paying taxes his entire life, has vowed to remain at the property until suitable accommodation is arranged. He described being told to hand over the keys with minimal personal belongings and was offered the prospect of a hostel or even sleeping on a couch. "It's a joke," Mangan stated, expressing his distress and depression following his wife's death from cancer.
He further revealed that the house is reportedly earmarked for a young family with disabled children. Mangan expressed understanding and empathy for this situation, noting he has a grandchild with similar needs. "Lord above, let them have this place. I don’t mind. Bring them in and they can have it, but I just want to make sure I have somewhere that can be my home before then," he said.
Mangan also investigated unoccupied apartments for senior citizens nearby. However, he was informed he would need to join a waiting list for those properties, leaving him with no immediate alternative housing.
In response to inquiries, a spokeswoman for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council stated that due to confidentiality and data protection policies, the council cannot comment on individual cases and is not in a position to provide information regarding Mangan's situation.
