A 75-year-old retired firefighter, George Barr, has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting at his Philadelphia home last Wednesday. The victim was identified as Salis Hanrahan, 20, an illegal immigrant from England who was part of a construction crew working on Barr's property.
According to neighbors, Barr, who recently lost his wife, had paid Hanrahan and his crew a $5,000 down payment for vinyl siding installation. However, Hanrahan allegedly began demanding increasingly large sums of money, with one neighbor recounting Barr's distress over the workers asking for more cash daily. The dispute reportedly escalated after damage was discovered on Barr's roof.
Police sources indicated that Hanrahan had demanded $70,000 for the work, a figure significantly higher than the estimated cost for such a job. The Department of Homeland Security identified Hanrahan as a member of a group known as the 'Traveling Conman Fraud Group,' which they described as a criminal organization recognized by the FBI. This group is known to provide low initial estimates for construction work and then demand more money from homeowners.
Neighbors described Barr, a Vietnam veteran, as a private man who had lived in the area for 45 years without issues. They expressed shock at his alleged involvement, with many supporting him in the wake of his arrest. Following the incident, Barr reportedly took his dog for a walk before police arrived and arrested him.
Barr was arraigned on charges including murder, possession of an instrument of crime, and recklessly endangering another person. Hanrahan's family in England is mourning his death. Government officials confirmed Hanrahan had been denied a visa due to his alleged affiliation with the 'Traveling Conman Fraud Group,' an organization reportedly comprised of British and Irish scammers who overcharge for incomplete building work.
Authorities stated that Hanrahan entered the country illegally on an unknown date and location. His coworkers reportedly continued working at the site even as he lay injured. A white Chevrolet Silverado truck, believed to belong to Hanrahan, remained parked outside Barr's home days after the incident.
