Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative commentator associated with Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck while speaking at an event in Utah on Wednesday and later died at a hospital, leaving his wife, Erika, and their two young children.

Family members and colleagues say Erika Kirk is drawing on her Christian faith as she copes with the loss and prepares to tell the couple’s three-year-old daughter and 16-month-old son that their father did not return home. Jack Posobiec, a contributor to Turning Point USA, told NewsNation on Thursday that Erika is “unbelievably strong,” and added, “someone’s going to have to explain to his son and daughter why their dad didn't come home yesterday.”

Beau Mason, commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety, told reporters on Thursday that Kirk’s family is "devastated." Authorities said they are conducting an active manhunt for the suspected shooter, described as a male of college age, and that they have video footage of the individual. Officials recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle in a wooded area after the suspect is believed to have jumped from the roof of the venue and fled the scene.

Kirk and his wife had marked their fourth wedding anniversary in May. Social media posts from Erika Kirk describe the couple’s 2021 wedding in Arizona as a "very intimate" ceremony and emphasize the couple’s Christian faith. In posts advising newly engaged couples, she wrote about focusing on the life after the wedding and prioritizing faith over planning details.

Erika Kirk, who held the title of Miss Arizona USA in 2012, attended Arizona State University and double majored in political science and international relations, according to her public biography. She has more recently launched a ministry program called BIBLEin365, which the program’s website says aims to help individuals engage with scripture. Her biography states that she cherishes her role as wife and mother and is committed to inspiring others to live “rooted in faith, and driven by the love of Christ.”

In the weeks before the shooting, the Kirks appeared with their children on Fox & Friends; clips circulated on social media showing the couple with their daughter in the television studio. Footage from the event in Utah showed Kirk beginning a question-and-answer session with students when he was struck and fell limp. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

Authorities said Thursday that the investigation is ongoing. They recovered the rifle after searching nearby wooded areas; the suspected shooter remains at large. Law enforcement did not release additional details about a possible motive or charges as the manhunt continued.

Colleagues, friends and conservative media figures have begun discussing how to support the family in the immediate aftermath, while the Kirks’ faith and public ministry work have been noted by those close to them as sources of strength. Officials asked anyone with information about the shooting or the individual seen on video to contact local authorities as the search continues.
