Army Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, who died during a controlled demolition of a downed Iranian drone in Iraq, is being remembered by his widow, Mia Gonzalez-Swinton, as a dedicated soldier and loving family man. The couple’s two young children, ages 6 and 4, are beginning to process the loss.
Mia Gonzalez-Swinton shared her grief and remembrances on "Fox & Friends First," describing the moment she learned of her husband's death as surreal. She recalled the presence of two uniformed service members at her door as the moment her life irrevocably changed.
A Father and Husband
Swinton, 30, was killed while conducting a controlled demolition in Iraq. His widow described him as someone who "loved his job," "loved this country," and deeply cared for those he encountered. She hopes that people remember him not only for his military service and awards but also as a devoted father and husband.
Gonzalez-Swinton noted that their daughter has begun to understand her father is gone, referring to him as her "angel." She acknowledged that it is unclear how much the children fully comprehend the extent of their loss.
Military Service and Posthumous Honors
Sgt. Swinton is posthumously being promoted to staff sergeant and will be awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge. He had previously received numerous accolades, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Combat Action Badge.
Gonzalez-Swinton expressed gratitude for the support from his unit and the community during this difficult time, emphasizing her desire for her husband's legacy to be remembered fully—both his military achievements and the man he was away from the battlefield.
