The Chicago White Sox are one win away from advancing to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2005, following their 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 2 of their ALDS matchup. The Guardians, who suffered through consecutive 100-loss seasons prior to this year, now find themselves on the brink of elimination.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams, who led the American League in strikeouts, delivered a strong performance, striking out 11 batters over 98 pitches. However, the Cleveland bullpen could not hold the lead after Williams' departure in the sixth inning. Erik Sabrowski allowed a go-ahead, two-run double to rookie Braden Montgomery, and Hunter Gaddis gave up an additional insurance run.
The White Sox bullpen also played a crucial role in the victory. Bulk pitcher Sean Burke provided 5.1 effective innings, and Grant Taylor closed out the game, securing the final four outs after allowing an RBI triple in the eighth. This follows a strong performance from the White Sox bullpen in Game 1, which included Taylor throwing 42 pitches over four shutout innings.
Offensively, the White Sox have been spurred by their emerging young talent. Munetaka Murakami continued his strong postseason, starting the scoring with an RBI single in Game 2 and having hit hard balls in Game 1, including a two-run home run. Other young hitters contributing include 25-year-old Chase Meidroth, who is batting .400 with five RBIs, Colson Montgomery, and rookie Braden Montgomery. Miguel Vargas has also reached base multiple times.
The Guardians' offense has struggled, managing just three runs and seven hits through the first two games of the series. Their strategy of relying on "Guards Ball," characterized by strong defense and pitching, proved vulnerable in October when their offense could not generate consistent scoring.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt acknowledged the team's difficult position, stating, "We've backed ourselves into a corner. We know that." He added, "If there's anything I know about this group of guys, it’s that we love challenges like this. We are going to embrace it."
The Guardians will now need to rely on Tanner Bibee, deadline addition Foster Griffin, or their bullpen to stave off elimination when the series shifts back to Chicago.
