The White House has responded sharply to musician John Mellencamp after he publicly mocked President Donald Trump's executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America." The exchange began during Mellencamp's "Dancing Words" Tour stop in Holmdel, New Jersey.

Mellencamp, while performing his hit song "Pink Houses," paused to address the crowd. As his band continued to play, the singer sarcastically questioned the name change, stating, "The Gulf of Mexico? Is that right? It’s not the Gulf of America? What a stupid f–----g idea." He then resumed the song.

In response, White House Spokesman Davis Ingle issued a statement to Fox News Digital on Monday. "Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch, woke Hollywood celebrities have to say," Ingle stated.

Released in 1983, "Pink Houses" has become one of Mellencamp's most recognizable songs. While often interpreted as a patriotic anthem, Mellencamp has described it as a commentary on the American dream, touching on themes of class disparity and the gap between national ideals and reality. The song was inspired by an image of a man sitting outside a small pink house in Indiana.

President Trump had previously held a "Gulf of America" hat on the South Lawn of the White House in April 2025. The executive order aimed to rename the body of water that borders the United States, Mexico, and Cuba.
