White House Press Secretary Faces Scrutiny Over Legal Credentials

White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia has not passed the California bar exam and has never passed a bar exam in the United States, according to reports. The revelation has led to increased scrutiny of her professional background, particularly her repeated self-description as a lawyer.

Zacharia, a graduate of Pepperdine University's law school in 2011, reportedly took the California bar exam shortly after graduation but did not pass. A source with direct knowledge of the matter told The Wall Street Journal that she was preparing for her wedding and an international move to China at the time.

Despite not passing an American bar examination, Zacharia has built a career in international legal transactions and presented herself as an attorney during public appearances. Searches of attorney licensing records in California, Texas, and Washington, D.C., have not identified her as a registered attorney.

The controversy gained wider attention after progressive journalist Judd Legum highlighted questions about her qualifications in his Popular Information newsletter. When questioned by a reporter on Tuesday about which state had admitted her to the bar, Zacharia responded, "When I moved to China," without further elaboration.

In a statement, Zacharia defended her professional history, stating, "I practiced international transaction law, with all the appropriate credentials." She later told The New York Times that she believed the reporter's question was asking where she was after law school, and that she had difficulty hearing due to the sound of Marine One.

The White House has expressed support for Zacharia. "Katie is a fabulous and wonderful addition to the team," White House spokesman Steven Cheung said. "She is uniquely qualified and whip smart to help inform the American people about all the great things President Trump and his Administration have been doing, and she will do an incredible job as Press Secretary."
