White House Press Secretary Defends Briefing Performance, Addresses Bar Exam Scrutiny

White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia has defended her performance during her inaugural press briefing, stating she "did her very best" given the minimal preparation time. Zacharia, who was appointed to the role by President Donald Trump just days prior to her first briefing, appeared on "Hannity" to address criticism surrounding the brevity of the event and questions about her legal qualifications.

Zacharia explained that she received briefing materials on the morning of her Tuesday debut and had less than eight hours on the job before stepping behind the podium. "With very little prep time, I received briefing materials in the morning of Tuesday," she told host Sean Hannity. She acknowledged that her roughly 14-minute briefing included only three questions, much of which was dedicated to highlighting the Trump administration's achievements ahead of the midterm elections.

Pushing back against assertions that she exclusively fielded questions from conservative news outlets, Zacharia pointed to the Daily Mail as an example of a publication not typically considered conservative, which she stated she took a question from. "However, the Daily Mail is not known to be a conservative outlet or friendly to conservatives so I do challenge that narrative," she said.

During her first briefing, Zacharia also announced a significant piece of news: the Trump administration's request for Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign from her ambassadorial role. "I was able to deliver breaking news, which I do believe was the right thing to do as the press secretary," she stated.

The scrutiny of Zacharia's debut was further intensified by reports from The Wall Street Journal suggesting she had not passed the California bar exam. Hannity questioned Zacharia directly about social media posts where she had identified herself as an attorney. Zacharia clarified that these were retweets and that she had not endorsed the title. She further explained that after graduating from Pepperdine Law School, she married and planned to move to China, not taking the bar exam a second time as the results had become inconsequential to her immediate plans.

She added that when engaging in media work and providing legal analysis, she consulted with attorneys and legal professionals regarding her ability to be labeled a lawyer, citing her juris doctor and substantive legal experience. Despite facing criticism, including a comparison to a kindergartner's intelligence from comedian Jimmy Kimmel, Zacharia expressed her commitment to the role. "I will be very prepared, Sean, and I will step up to the duty that President Trump has asked me to as press secretary," she affirmed, expressing a desire to build stronger relationships and have more substantive interactions with the White House press corps going forward.
