White House Press Secretary Admits Underpreparedness in First Briefing

White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia has acknowledged that she was underprepared for her first press briefing and suggested she might have been better off not taking questions. Zacharia stated that she had only been on the job for a day and had received her briefing book that morning.

Speaking on Fox News, Zacharia told Sean Hannity that, given the circumstances, she believes she did her best to represent the American people. She indicated that the appropriate course of action might have been to deliver a brief introductory statement rather than engage with the press corps.

She expressed a commitment to being better prepared for future briefings and aims to build a stronger relationship with the press. Zacharia also noted that she was able to announce staff changes, including the resignation of Kimberly Guilfoyle, during her first appearance.

Zacharia also addressed past criticism regarding her use of the title 'lawyer,' explaining that she had graduated from Pepperdine's law school and had intended to take the bar exam but deferred due to a planned move to China. She confirmed she did not retake the exam.

The press secretary's initial briefing was brief, lasting only 15 minutes. Despite the rocky start, White House spokesperson Steven Cheung described Zacharia as a "fabulous and wonderful addition to the team" who is "uniquely qualified and whip smart." President Trump also commented on her performance, stating, "I thought she was very good."

Zacharia's appointment was reportedly an abrupt one, with President Trump offering her the position over the phone shortly after observing her defend him on television. Her hiring was announced days later via Truth Social.

Prior to her current role, Zacharia began her career as an intern for the Republican National Committee. She holds an undergraduate degree from Pepperdine's Seaver College and a law degree from its Caruso School of Law. Her experience includes work in the White House Office of Political Affairs during the Bush administration and a role as an outside counsel for the World Bank in China. Her husband, Tyler, has worked as a producer on several films. Zacharia maintains a significant social media presence while keeping her family life private.
