The White House is undertaking a renovation project to construct a new helipad, a development that has drawn criticism from some lawmakers who argue it prioritizes construction over legislative action. The project's cost and timing have also come under scrutiny.

Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York described the helipad project as a "joke," asserting that President Trump is focusing on construction while neglecting important legislation. "Trump has refused to sign a bipartisan housing bill that would lower costs for working Americans, build more housing, and stop private equity from buying up homes. But he's laser-focused on building a new helipad," Gillibrand stated.

The Washington Post reported that the White House accelerated construction for the helipad ahead of an "upcoming state visit," leading to an estimated cost increase of approximately $875,000, according to documents reviewed by the publication. While the documents did not specify the visitor, officials reportedly requested the expedited timeline days after Trump extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping for a visit on September 24.

Trump reportedly suggested that the helipad could be utilized for other White House functions, including events and news conferences. While the case for a new helipad had been made earlier in the year, the plans were not officially confirmed until Monday.
