The White House presented Secretary of State Marco Rubio with a framed collage of his most viral "Rubio realizing" memes as a birthday gift in May, a detail that recently surfaced publicly. The gift, for his 55th birthday, features 68 individual panels depicting Rubio in numerous imagined roles, from Robocop to an astronaut.

The mosaic is signed by administration officials, including the president, who inscribed "You are great" in gold ink above his signature. The collage was made public Wednesday via a tweet from Axios reporter Marc Caputo.

The meme originated from a photograph taken on Feb. 28, 2025, showing Rubio sitting in the Oval Office alongside top cabinet officials and Vice President JD Vance during a meeting with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting concerned an agreement to share Ukraine's mineral resources as a way to offset U.S. investment in the country's defense. In the original photo, Rubio's posture and expression, with interlocked fingers, became the template for the meme, often conveying a sense of comic reluctance or unexpected responsibility.

Over time, the "Rubio realizing" meme evolved to place him in a wide array of scenarios, both real and fantastical. He was depicted as the governor of Greenland, the shah of Iran, the pope, and even as a plumber addressing issues with the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier's toilets. The meme also adapted to current events, showing Rubio in hunting gear mimicking a Minnesota governor's campaign photoshoot and as a high-ranking military leader following the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro.

Rubio has commented on the meme, stating in a Fox News interview with Lara Trump that he initially disliked it but has since come to find it humorous. He attributed his slumped posture in the original photograph to the lack of a pillow on the couch, which caused him to sink into it.
