A White House spokesperson has denied claims that President Donald Trump's administration was influenced by "pardon brokers," as examined in a recent "60 Minutes" investigation. White House spokesperson Lauren Bis stated that President Trump does not know these alleged lobbyists and that any money spent to lobby for pardons would be foolishly wasted.

During its season premiere, "60 Minutes" featured a segment on lobbyists reportedly negotiating presidential pardons for clients based on alleged connections to the president. Correspondent Lesley Stahl suggested that Trump developed his own vetting system, pardoning political allies and individuals who claimed to be wrongly prosecuted, and that donations and high fees for lawyers and lobbyists facilitated these pardons.

Bis criticized previous presidential pardons, particularly those by President Biden, stating that many commuted sentences for violent criminals. "The only pardons anyone should be critical of are from President Biden, who pardoned and commuted sentences of violent criminals including child killers and mass murderers, and extreme liberal Democrat Governors who pardoned illegal alien child rapists and attempted murderers in attempts to allow them to remain in our country," Bis said.

She further asserted that the Trump administration had a robust pardon review process involving White House counsel, the Department of Justice, and pardon czar Alice Johnson, with the President as the final decider. "Anyone spending money to lobby for pardons is foolishly wasting their money and the President doesn’t even know who these so-called ‘lobbyists’ are," Bis added.

The "60 Minutes" report aired amid internal changes at the program, with some former employees suggesting that firings were related to a refusal to compromise journalistic principles or include "White House talking points" in reporting. A former producer, Guy Campanile, indicated in a private post that staff objected to conducting interviews arranged by the administration and insisted on asking challenging questions to leaders without fear or favor.
