Sony Pictures Television has terminated the employment of "Wheel of Fortune" announcer Jim Thornton following an investigation into his alleged use of a controversial chatroom. The game show implemented the firing after Thornton, 61, was reportedly seen by a fellow passenger in May 2026 browsing Lifeline.chat, a website described as being for individuals experiencing pedophilic thoughts, during a flight from North Carolina to Los Angeles.

News of the incident surfaced last week, leading to Thornton's suspension and subsequent dismissal. Organizers of Lifeline.chat issued a statement to TMZ, distancing their organization from any illicit activity and emphasizing their rules against sharing criminalized images. They stated that users violating these rules are promptly banned and their messages removed.

The organizers explained that their platform offers a support space for individuals attracted to children and adolescents, asserting that many such individuals are capable of responsible behavior and are distressed by societal stigma. They believe that providing a space for discussion can contribute to better mental health and that affirming feelings while encouraging lawful conduct is the most constructive approach.

According to the statement, messages that may be perceived as offensive are permitted as long as they do not cross legal boundaries or pose a risk of harm. The organizers further argued that minor-attracted individuals often face a severe risk of being reported to authorities for simply disclosing their feelings, citing Thornton's situation as an example of a "metaphorical lynching."

Thornton's attorney, Allison Hart, previously stated that Thornton visited the site by mistake. She explained that he frequently visits the suicide prevention website 988lifeline.org and its associated chat forum. Hart claimed that an acquaintance from the suicide prevention group mistakenly sent Thornton a link to Lifeline.chat, and that Thornton left the chatroom upon realizing its nature.

Hart also asserted that her client did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with a crime. She indicated that law enforcement questioned Thornton briefly after a fellow passenger complained on the flight and determined no wrongdoing had occurred.

"Wheel of Fortune" began tapings for its 44th season at Sony Studios in Los Angeles on Tuesday, with sources telling TMZ that the show proceeded without an announcer. Hosts Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White reportedly maintained a positive atmosphere during the taping, with no mention of Thornton's situation.

Thornton, who began as the announcer for "Wheel of Fortune" in 2011, is rarely seen on the program, which is hosted by Seacrest and Vanna White. He also had a brief role as an announcer on "The Price Is Right" in 2004 and has lent his voice to Disney-Pixar films such as "Monsters, Inc." and "Wall-E."
