What Happened to the Cast of 'Friday Night Lights'?

It has been 20 years since "Friday Night Lights" (FNL) first introduced audiences to the Dillon Panthers, a high school football team in rural Texas. The series, starring Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, garnered critical acclaim and developed a devoted following over its five-season run. The New York Times recently recognized its impact, ranking it 14th on its list of the 100 best TV shows of the 21st century.

A Look Back at the Cast's Journeys

Kyle Chandler (Coach Eric Taylor)

Kyle Chandler, who portrayed the firm but fair Coach Eric Taylor, earned an Emmy Award for his role. While filming FNL, he took on film roles in "Super 8," "Argo," and "Zero Dark Thirty." After the series concluded, Chandler returned to television with a role in the Netflix series "Bloodline," securing two more Emmy nominations. He also made a foray into the DC Universe with a casting in the TV series "Lanterns." Chandler declined an offer for an FNL movie, believing the series had a perfect ending.

Connie Britton (Tami Taylor)

Connie Britton, who played Coach Taylor's wife Tami, already had a notable career before FNL. Her role as the supportive guidance counselor expanded her fanbase. Britton has since starred in "American Horror Story: Murder House," "Dirty John," and "The White Lotus," as well as the lead role in the country music drama "Nashville." She adopted her son, Yoby, from Ethiopia in 2011 and is now engaged to producer David Windsor.

Jesse Plemons (Landry Clarke)

Jesse Plemons, who played the lovable goofball Landry Clarke, saw his career reach new heights after FNL. He has since appeared in "Breaking Bad," "Black Mirror," and "Fargo," where he met his wife, Kirsten Dunst. Plemons received an Academy Award nomination for "The Power of the Dog" and won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for "Kinds of Kindness." His co-star Michael B. Jordan jokingly presented him with a "Best Teammate" award when Jordan won an acting honor they were both nominated for.

Michael B. Jordan (Vince Howard)

Michael B. Jordan's role as quarterback Vince Howard provided a crucial boost to his career after his earlier appearance on "The Wire." He went on to star in "Fruitvale Station," "Creed," and "Black Panther." In 2020, he was recognized by The New York Times as one of the greatest actors of the 21st century. Jordan recently won a Best Actor Oscar for his role in the critically acclaimed horror film "Sinners."

Scott Porter (Jason Street)

Scott Porter's portrayal of football player Jason Street was a defining role in his career. He later joined the cast of "Hart of Dixie" and "Ginny & Georgia." Porter is also a prolific voice actor for comic book projects. He competed on "The Masked Singer" in 2024, finishing as the runner-up. Porter met his wife, Kelsey, a cheerleader at the University of Texas at Austin, on the set of FNL.

Taylor Kitsch (Tim Riggins)

Taylor Kitsch gained widespread recognition for his role as the fan-favorite Tim Riggins. Before FNL, Kitsch struggled financially, even sleeping on the subway in New York. His role in the series served as a springboard for his career, leading to roles in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "True Detective." Kitsch has expressed openness to a limited return to FNL, possibly for an episode, but not a full revival. He is currently focused on opening a nature retreat in Montana.

Minka Kelly (Lyla Garrity)

Minka Kelly found fame as Lyla Garrity, a role that provided a lifeline during a challenging period in her life, which she detailed in her memoir. She later appeared in "Parenthood" and the revival of "Charlie's Angels." Kelly described a difficult, "toxic" relationship with co-star Taylor Kitsch during filming, which impacted her interactions with other cast members.

Zach Gilford (Matt Saracen)

Zach Gilford, who played the shy Matt Saracen, has since taken on roles in "Midnight Mass," "The Midnight Club," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." He appeared in Taylor Swift's 2011 music video for "Ours." Gilford married his "Matadors" co-star Kiele Sanchez in 2012, though he filed for divorce last year.
