Westlife Star Sues Surgeon Over Weight-Loss Surgery Complications

Westlife singer Mark Feehily is suing a surgeon, alleging that weight-loss surgery performed in 2020 at Spire Portsmouth Hospital caused recurring sepsis and other serious complications. The musician claims the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy led to a dangerous leak and infections, necessitating the removal of his entire stomach in May 2023.

Feehily, 46, has undergone at least four major surgeries since 2020, including procedures for pneumonia, a chest infection, and a large incisional hernia. He spent months in intensive care during the COVID-19 pandemic following the initial gastric surgery.

The claim, lodged with the High Court and valued at over £200,000, asserts that surgeon Nick Carter failed to remove sufficient stomach tissue, leaving behind an infected portion. Carter denies claims of negligence, arguing that while a portion of stomach tissue remained and a leak occurred at the staple line, this was an appropriate surgical decision and a recognized complication occurring in about 1% of cases.

A preliminary split trial is expected to take place between May 28 and July 31 to determine if Carter was negligent and if Feehily's complications resulted from the surgeon's actions. Witness statements are due to be filed, followed by expert surgical and radiology reports.

Leigh Day Solicitors, representing Feehily, stated that the singer has been resilient through his challenging health period and appreciates fan support, but will not comment further due to the ongoing court process. Carter's legal team has indicated they will not comment while proceedings are active.

Feehily stepped down from touring with Westlife in February 2024, having previously taken a hiatus in late 2022. He shared an update with fans in December 2025, explaining that he was not yet well enough for a world tour but was able to engage in lighter broadcast work, such as hosting a radio show.
