Western Sydney International Airport Opens After Decades of Planning

Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) has commenced operations with the first passenger flight taking off on Sunday, marking the culmination of decades of planning and construction. Jetstar operated the inaugural service, flight JQ362 to the Gold Coast, which departed at 11:22 a.m. local time.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese officially opened the $5.3 billion airport by unveiling a commemorative plaque, stating his long-standing support for the project. "This airport will make a real difference for Western Sydney, creating jobs, supporting local businesses and making it easier for people to travel for generations to come," Albanese said, thanking the thousands of workers involved.

Discussions for Sydney's second airport began decades ago, with construction on the 45km west of the CBD site commencing in late 2018. The new airport will operate 24 hours a day, a key distinction from Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport, which has noise restrictions between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Albanese also addressed criticisms regarding the airport's location, emphasizing its benefit to the western Sydney population. "Most of the people do not live closer to the CBD than they do to here," he noted, adding that the airport represents a shift in focus towards where people live and invest.

Air New Zealand is scheduled to operate the airport's first international passenger flight on Monday, arriving from Auckland. Several other international airlines are set to begin services in the coming months, including Singapore Airlines on November 23, VietJet Air in January, Fiji Airways in March, and Qatar Airways late next year.

Domestically, WSI will offer flights to Melbourne, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. Cargo flights have been operating at the airport for the past three months.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers expressed optimism that the increased competition from WSI would lead to reduced airfares. "When it comes to the particular elements around ticket prices and freight charges and all the rest of it, we'll see how that plays out. But in aggregate, in principle, it's a very good development for competition," Chalmers stated.

Western Sydney Airport chairman Paul O'Sullivan highlighted the project as a nation-building endeavor and proof that Australia can deliver major infrastructure on time and on budget. Jetstar's chief executive, Stephanie Tully, noted strong demand for services from the region, indicating the airport's potential as a major hub.
