West Virginia Woman Charged in Husband's Death After Allegedly Leaving Him on Toilet for 19 Hours

A 75-year-old West Virginia woman has been arrested and charged with abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult in connection with her husband's death. Margaret Rog is accused of leaving her 76-year-old husband, who had dementia, Alzheimer's, and legal blindness, on the toilet for approximately 19 hours.

According to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred last month when her husband went to the bathroom around 3 p.m. on August 20. His wife allegedly stated she was unable to assist him off the toilet. Investigators claim Rog left her husband unattended and unresponsive without food, water, or his prescribed medications overnight.

Deputies reported that Rog allegedly observed her husband groaning in pain but did not seek help, instead going to bed while he remained on the toilet. The following morning, around 10 a.m., a speech therapist arrived for a scheduled visit and found the man unresponsive and in critical condition. The therapist then called for an ambulance.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he was diagnosed with several serious conditions, including heart failure, respiratory failure, pulmonary embolism, hypernatremia, sepsis, and rhabdomyolysis. Medical professionals also noted wounds on his backside, shortness of breath, and an altered mental status. The man died on August 31. Investigators believe the conditions resulting from being left on the toilet were significant contributing factors to his death.

During the investigation, Rog allegedly made self-incriminating statements to law enforcement, adult protection services, and family members, according to court documents. She reportedly acknowledged her husband's need for assistance but claimed she did not offer any. Rog pleaded not guilty to the charges on Tuesday and was released on a $75,000 bond.
