A woman in Fairmont, West Virginia, has been arrested on child neglect charges after her 6-year-old son, who has autism, fell from a second-story apartment window and later tested positive for cocaine. Deputies responded to an apartment complex on Monday following a 911 call reporting the incident.
The boy’s mother, Stevie Thibodeaux, 30, told deputies she was asleep when the child exited the apartment. She reportedly showed deputies childproof locks on the doors, which she stated usually prevent her son from leaving. However, authorities observed that a screen was missing from the window the child used to exit.
After being transported to a local hospital for evaluation, the child tested positive for cocaine, according to court documents. A search of Thibodeaux’s apartment revealed a plate with a food stamp card, a drug ingestion device, and a white powdery substance. Thibodeaux admitted to using cocaine and leaving the drug-related items in her closet.
She was charged with child neglect creating risk of serious injury or death and booked into the North Central Regional Jail. The condition of the child is currently unknown.
