West Virginia Couple Arrested on Child Abuse Charges

A West Virginia couple has been arrested on multiple felony charges related to child abuse and neglect. Erica Lynn Sayre, 45, and Clifford Gale Sayre, 46, of Evans, are accused of subjecting three children to severe physical and emotional abuse over several years.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office announced the charges, which include three counts of felony child abuse resulting in bodily injury and three counts of felony child neglect creating risk of injury. Deputies began their investigation after receiving accounts from the children detailing numerous incidents of abuse.

According to the sheriff's office, one child reported being struck in the head with an electronic device, an injury that went untreated. Another child claimed that Erica Sayre forcibly cut her hair with a razor while Clifford Sayre restrained her hands, resulting in injury. The children also reported being strangled, deprived of food and water, denied bathroom privileges, and having soiled items, including socks and cat litter, forced into their beds or mouths.

Prosecutors allege that Clifford Sayre witnessed these instances of abuse by his wife but failed to intervene. One child reportedly told deputies, "mom hits us and Gale lets her," while another expressed a desire to "just wants a normal life." A third child became emotional during interviews, stating, "I can't go back to that home."

The sheriff's office stated that physical evidence, including scars consistent with the children's accounts, corroborated their statements. "The outlined findings of the investigation are deeply troubling and underscore the importance of reporting suspected child abuse, as the children were all living in a real life 'House of Horrors' with the adults in their lives that should have otherwise been protecting them from such occurrences and conditions, not creating them," Sheriff RH Mellinger said in a statement.

Both Erica and Clifford Sayre have posted bond. The children have been removed from the home by Child Protective Services. Erica Sayre is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on November 20, and Clifford Sayre's preliminary hearing was scheduled for Monday afternoon. It is unclear if either suspect has retained legal representation.
