West Midlands Police Officer Sacked for Gross Misconduct Over 2,000 Record Accesses
An officer was dismissed after inappropriately accessing police records over a five-year period, with many containing sensitive personal information.
A West Midlands Police officer has been dismissed for gross misconduct after accessing police records more than 2,000 times over approximately five years. The misconduct hearing acknowledged that PC Shannon Parsons, who worked part-time and had recently returned from maternity leave, felt isolated and disconnected. However, the panel concluded that her extensive searches were for her "own personal benefit" rather than a policing purpose.
Parsons had claimed she was seeking to "keep herself up to date, informed and was often in a position to support and assist other colleagues in operational matters." The panel heard that many of the records accessed were sensitive and held "intimate information," with several incidents occurring near her home address.
Despite an otherwise unblemished 13-year career with West Midlands Police, the panel found that Parsons showed no insight or remorse regarding the potential harm caused by accessing such a large volume of information over an extended period. As a result of the gross misconduct finding, she was dismissed without notice and barred from future employment in policing.
