West Ham United began their Championship campaign with a disappointing 2-2 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor, surrendering a two-goal lead in the final quarter of the match.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo had voiced concerns about the team's need for resilience and attacking reinforcements prior to the game, and his pre-match warnings proved prophetic. Despite holding a 2-0 advantage in the 72nd minute following goals from defender Max Kilman in the 10th minute and debutant Manor Solomon in the 72nd, West Ham conceded twice late on.

Burnley's Zian Flemming, who had been a constant threat throughout the match, converted an 83rd-minute penalty after a foul by Ollie Scarles on Marcus Edwards. Flemming then secured the equalizer in the second minute of added time with a low strike.

Nuno expressed his disappointment with the result, stating, "It's disappointing. We had a very good first half and when we scored the second goal we should have done better to get the result. There are many things that we have to improve on."

The manager confirmed that West Ham, who recently broke the EFL transfer record by signing Celtic midfielder Arne Engels for £22 million, still requires new additions. "We need more players – especially offensively," Nuno said.

West Ham took a 1-0 lead when Kilman headed home a corner from captain Jarrod Bowen. The lead was extended when Mohamadou Kante crossed for Solomon to score from close range.

Flemming, who caused the Hammers¿ defence untold problems all afternoon, scored twice to level matters at the death

Burnley manager Nicky Hayen, celebrating his 46th birthday, praised his team's courage and resilience. "We played a good game and showed a lot of courage and resilience so I’m really satisfied," Hayen said. "We wanted to make a connection with the fans and bring the energy to the stadium for 95 minutes."

Despite the positive start for Burnley, concerns remain for their fans regarding the potential sale of Flemming, who scored 12 Premier League goals last season, before the transfer window closes.

This marks West Ham's first game outside the top flight in 14 years. The club was relegated last season, and Nuno acknowledges that promotion is the sole objective for the current campaign.
