Wesley Fofana has spoken out about a difficult season at Chelsea, detailing personal challenges, team instability, and his experiences with online hate.
Fofana described his move to Chelsea as a "dream" but acknowledged the club's tenth-place Premier League finish and lack of trophies last season. He faced criticism, including footage of him laughing on the bench during a Champions League defeat, which he downplayed as not as significant as perceived, stating that those within the club understood his "mentality." "When the team is not doing well, we need to find someone [to blame]. I can accept that," Fofana said, recognizing his status as a high-profile signing meant he was a potential target for criticism.
He noted that while the team could have used coaching changes as an excuse, the responsibility ultimately lay with the players. "We didn't give everything. We lost some games, we produced some poor performances and we missed a lot of things," he stated, emphasizing that the team needed to learn from last season's shortcomings.
Beyond on-field issues, Fofana also addressed the racial abuse he has experienced. As a Muslim whose father is from Ivory Coast, he has been targeted with racist messages, including monkey emojis, on social media platforms. "It hurts to see those messages, but I will never stop calling it out," he said, stressing the importance of exposing such behavior to educate others. He believes that social media platforms need to be more aware and conscious of these problems, as the abuse is not solely confined to football but reflects a broader societal issue. Fofana noted that while some messages appear to be from unhappy fans, the underlying sentiment is unacceptable.
He highlighted that younger players have also received similar abuse and have not spoken out. Having personally experienced such harassment from a young age, Fofana remains committed to speaking against it, even if it leads to personal criticism.
Despite the adversities, Fofana expressed optimism for Chelsea's future, believing that stability will lead to success for the club.
